Step 1: Check Whether Your Host Includes Free SSL

Most hosting providers already include a free SSL certificate. You don’t need to buy anything. Let’s Encrypt, the leading free certificate authority, has issued over 4 billion certificates since 2015 (Let’s Encrypt, 2025). Every major host supports it.

Here’s a quick reference. GoDaddy, Bluehost, SiteGround, Hostinger, A2 Hosting — all include free SSL on standard plans. Wix, Squarespace, and WordPress.com enable it automatically. If you’re on any of these, the certificate already exists. You just haven’t turned it on.

What if your host charges for SSL?

Some budget hosts or legacy plans charge $50-$100/year for something that’s free everywhere else. That’s a red flag about the host, not a reason to skip HTTPS. A modern hosting plan with free SSL runs $3-$10/month. The cost of not having HTTPS — lost trust, lower rankings, fewer calls — makes the old plan more expensive than switching.

How to check right now: Log into your hosting dashboard. Look for “SSL,” “Security,” or “HTTPS” in the sidebar. If you see a toggle or a “Free SSL” option, you’re one click away from fixing this.


Step 2: Enable the SSL Certificate in Your Hosting Panel

This is the step that takes the longest to explain but the least time to do. On most platforms, it’s a single toggle.

cPanel hosts (Bluehost, HostGator, SiteGround, etc.): Navigate to SSL/TLS Status or AutoSSL. Click “Run AutoSSL” or enable the certificate for your domain. Wait 2-5 minutes for provisioning.

WordPress.com: SSL is automatic. If you’re on a custom domain, check Settings > General and confirm both URLs start with https://.

Wix: SSL is enabled by default. Verify at Settings > SSL Certificate.

Squarespace: SSL is automatic on all Squarespace sites. No action needed beyond confirming it’s active under Settings > SSL.

Custom server (VPS, dedicated): Install Certbot (Let’s Encrypt’s tool). Run sudo certbot --apache or sudo certbot --nginx. Follow the prompts. Under 10 minutes.

Don’t skip this step and assume it’s already done. Over 95% of Chrome page loads globally use HTTPS (Google Transparency Report, 2025) — meaning the internet moved on years ago. Your site needs to catch up.


Step 3: Force the HTTP-to-HTTPS Redirect

This is the step most electricians miss. Having an SSL certificate isn’t enough. You need to force every visitor to the HTTPS version. Without the redirect, someone typing http://yoursite.com still sees the “Not Secure” warning. The certificate sits unused.

WordPress: Install the Really Simple SSL plugin. Activate it. One click. Done. The plugin detects your certificate and forces all traffic through HTTPS.

Wix and Squarespace: The redirect is automatic once SSL is active. Nothing extra needed.

.htaccess (Apache servers): Add these three lines to the top of your .htaccess file:

The SSL certificate existed but HTTP traffic wasn’t being forced to HTTPS. Chrome only shows the padlock when the connection is actually encrypted. Step 4: Fix Mixed Content Warnings That Break the Padlock

You’ve enabled SSL. You’ve forced the redirect. But Chrome still shows a warning — this time about “mixed content.” This happens when your page loads over HTTPS but some images, scripts, or stylesheets still reference HTTP URLs. One insecure resource breaks the padlock.

Mixed content is common on older electrician sites. A logo uploaded years ago might reference http://yoursite.com/logo.png instead of https://. An embedded Google Map might use an old HTTP embed code. A font loaded from an external source might not use HTTPS.

How to find mixed content

Open your site in Chrome. Right-click anywhere and select “Inspect.” Click the “Console” tab. Look for yellow or red warnings that mention “Mixed Content.” Each warning tells you exactly which resource is loading over HTTP.

How to fix it

Update each flagged URL from http:// to https://. In WordPress, the Really Simple SSL plugin handles most of these automatically. On other platforms, you’ll need to update image URLs, script references, and embed codes manually. For a typical electrician site with 5-10 pages, this takes 10-15 minutes.

Step 5: Verify the HTTPS Version in Google Search Console

Google treats http://yoursite.com and https://yoursite.com as two separate properties. If your Search Console only tracks the HTTP version, Google’s index doesn’t know your secure version exists. Your rankings could split between two URLs instead of consolidating on one.

Go to Google Search Console. Add your HTTPS domain as a new property if it isn’t there. Submit your sitemap (https://yoursite.com/sitemap.xml). Google will begin crawling and indexing the secure version within days.

Why this matters for rankings

Google confirmed HTTPS as a ranking signal in August 2014 (Google Search Central Blog, 2014). It’s described as a “lightweight” signal, but in local search — where electricians compete — margins are thin. You’re not up against Amazon. You’re competing against five other electricians in your zip code. A small ranking signal can move you from position 8 to position 3.
